How I Rate My Books

I use a 1-5 star book rating scale in order to easily show my overall enjoyment of a book. All my star ratings our just my opinion of the book, and are a way to easily reference my enjoyment of the book!

⭐ – 1 star

A one star rating means I did not enjoy the book at all. I struggled to read and maybe didn’t even finish it. The characters need a lot more depth, and the plot is lacking in many places. It also means the book didn’t really speak to me and I didn’t relate to it much. The book also probably lacked good theme(s) and motifs.

⭐⭐ – 2 Star

A two star book holds many of the same traits as a one star book, it just had a little bit more depth, or was a little less lacking. The characters were somewhat likable, but weren’t very well developed. The plot isn’t balanced enough and the action is spread out in a way that makes me bored in many instances. There may be some themes and motifs, but they are mostly cliche and aren’t that meaningful.

⭐⭐⭐ – 3 Star

A three star book is your average good book. A read that I enjoy, but isn’t my favorite, and doesn’t make me jump up and down for a sequel. It’s a book I’ll happily read because the writing is good, and so are the characters and plot, but the storyline/idea is a bit common and lacking a unique flair.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 4 Star

A four star book is the book that stays on my mind for a while and I’ll be recommending it for ages to come. It’s a book that is great and probably deserves a reread (but most likely won’t get one because my TBR is WAY too long 😂). The characters are amazing, lovable, and make you wish the author would give more page time to your favs. The motif and themes are top-notch, and may leave you questioning life for a short period of time. The plot of a four star book usually has lots of twists and turns that keep me excited and engaged throughout the read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 5 Star

A five star book is one that I stumble upon every fifty books or so. It’s a book that is rare and unique. A book that is beautiful and heartbreaking. A book that ultimately changes me because it is filled with many deep motifs and themes. It causes me to view the world just a little bit differently because I walked a world in another person’s shoes. A five star book leaves me contemplating the morals of right and wrong, and leaves me wondering what-if? The characters of a five star book aren’t perfect. They have their flaws, but that is just what makes them perfect. These beautifully written flaws make the character real, and allow you to keep the book in your heart for many years to come. The plot is something that may leave me screaming and crying, but is worth it all the same. A five star book isn’t perfect, it’s the imperfectness of the world, the story, and the characters that make the book perfect, and make the book change me.
