A Bookish Girl’s Ponderings – Thursday’s Thoughts: DNFing Books

Hey guys!!! I’m starting a new weekly post page called A Bookish Girl’s Ponderings!!! I’ll have different types of posts here, such as Thursday’s Thoughts and Weekly Reading Updates!!!

Declaring books as “did not finish” can be tough for many readers, me included! Here’s my opinion on DNFing books, and some advice for those who struggle to DNF books (aka me 🤪)

What is DNFing?

DNFing a books is when you say that you did not finish the book, and you aren’t going to. This basically means you didn’t like the book enough to keep reading it.

My Thoughts

I struggle a lot with DNFing books! I don’t like to leave things unfinished in general, and books are no exception! This definitely makes it hard for me to DNF a book, even if I don’t like it! I tell myself that I’ll just power through and read it fast. I keep reading even if the novel isn’t really bringing me that much joy. Eventually, I realized that if I’m reading, my time should be spent with books that I love, instead of reading just for the sake of reading! While I think marking a book as DNF is totally okay (I mean you’re not gonna love every book you read) I understand that it can be tough! As a reader, you want to know what happens, and feel that sense of accomplishment when you finish a book! Overall, I believe DNFing books is totally okay, but I also understand and personally struggle with not completing a book!!

Advice!

Having trouble DNFing a book that’s part of a series? Maybe try to finish the book and then DNF the rest of the series! This can be good because then you technically don’t DNF a book, and you still (mostly) finish the story!

Audiobooks are also a great alternative to DNFing books! If you don’t regularly read audiobooks, you can try finishing the book on audiobook instead! I tried this, and it literally got me hooked on audiobooks!

Start reading something else at the same time to let it fade out! If you get engrossed in another book or series, you’ll naturally forget/become uninterested in the book! This means you can DNF a book by kinda forgetting about it and just movibg on!!

And if none of that works or sounds good to you, maybe just power through and use those speed reading skills!! This is obviously not the best option, but then you still read it!!
