By John Green
What’s it about?
Quentin has spent his whole life idolizing the mysterious Margo Spiegelman from afar. Then, one night he is chosen to go on a revenge seeking adventure through Orlando with Margo. But after the adventure, Margo becomes a mystery. She disappears leaving clues that only Quentin can follow. As more clues arise, Quentin begins to question how well he really knew Margo, and what that means about her disappearance.
My Rating
This book was fun and lighthearted, but also very thought-provoking! While the characters and the plot weren’t my favorite, the themes were possibly life changing.
What I loved
The motifs and themes were expertly embedded throughout the story. Once I neared the end of the book, I realized my perspective on life changed a bit. I can’t tell you exactly why my perspective changed because that would spoil the book, but it was truly beautiful!
What I Disliked
The characters weren’t my favorite. While they had a lot of depth, they weren’t super lovable. They didn’t have me begging for more page time, they were just there.
The plot seemed a little out there. It felt as if the story was meant to be somewhat realistic fic, but it wasn’t. The mystery wasn’t extremely well developed. The story was still interesting, it just wasn’t a page-turner.
Book vs. Movie
Paper Towns does have a movie, but I haven’t watched it yet!! Watch it (after you read the book!!) and tell me what you think!
Should You Read It?
I would recommend this book if you’re in the mood for something thoughtful, somewhat sad, but also hopeful. While I don’t think someone who likes fast-paced books or edgy mysteries should add this to the top of their TBR, it’s a great novel for any thoughtful reader!
Quotes
“Leaving feels good and pure only when you leave something important, something that mattered to you. Pulling life out by the roots. But you can’t do that until your life has grown roots.”
-John Green, Paper Towns
Conclusion
Paper Towns by John Green is a thought provoking mystery novel. The plot and the characters were lacking in some instances, but the themes altered my perspective on life. This book isn’t perfect for everyone, but if someone wants a thoughtful read this book is a good choice!
